What's Happening at Camp: Overday, Moana, and Water Carnival!

It’s hard to believe we’re at the halfway point of the summer – time really does fly when you’re having fun, and we’ve had an unbelievable amount of fun here at Camp! Our Fox and Bear campers had a ball at Tuesday’s Overday, and parents came out in record numbers to join in on the fun. John Fitz and the Folk Tradition have been playing the Sewataro Overdays for many years, and Fitz himself was a counselor here at Sewataro off and on since his high school days! But the real “stars” of the show were your children, who’d been practicing their songs with Variety counselor Michael over the past few weeks. They were awesome! The evening culminated with our amazing counselors leading campers in a joyous rendition of “Green Alligators” (a.k.a. “The Unicorn Song”), and then “Kumbaya,” which is the perfect way to end a special Sewataro evening. (It may have rained elsewhere, but here in the “Sewataro Bubble”—as it’s been affectionately referred to—life was good.)

WATER seemed to be the word of the week, as keeping our campers cool on these dog days of summer is our number one priority. In addition to each and every campers’ two daily swim periods, there are misting stations, water bubblers, sprinklers and the ever-popular Camper Car Wash strategically placed around the property, so that campers have the opportunity to cool off and stay hydrated no matter where they are. Additionally, activities are modified and regularly include water games. Capping off the week of “H2-Awesome” (as campers have dubbed it), was the annual Water Carnival! This year’s theme was “Moana,” and as always, the counselor section relay (down the giant slip-n-slide on the lawn in front of HQ) was a crowd favorite. The sounds of campers and counselors cheering “Fox!” “Bear!” and “Eagle!” were probably heard for miles around, and we loved every minute of it. This is what the Spirit of Sewataro is all about! As an added surprise at Closing Exercises, it was revealed that the Green Gizmo had been passed to Moana! Moana (played by Variety counselor Lo), came up and lent her incredible voice to the afternoon’s Gizmo shenanigans, which was a treat for all, and a sensational send-off for our campers in sessions 4.1 and 2.2.

Session transitions are always bittersweet. It’s tough saying goodbye to campers in session 4.1, who’ve been with us since June 26th, and to our friends in session 2.2. You are very much a part of the fabric of Sewataro, and we’re so glad you were here. We wish you a fun-filled rest of your summer, and we hope to see you back here in 2018. (Feel free to stay in touch during the school year – we always enjoy hearing about how our campers are doing!) And to our friends continuing on into Week 5 and beyond, we look forward to seeing you back at Camp on Monday for another week of Sewataro fun.
